Gail has been a strong advocate for policies and initiatives that build healthy families and communities:

• Co-authored the county's smoking ordinance, the first county ban in the state
• Leads Active Living Hennepin County, an initiative to increase biking and walking in everyday life
• Advocate for mental health reform, to provide better access to mental health care for children and adults
• Chaired the Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program Policy Advisory Board
• Chairs the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board
